Centrelink Benefits and Payments Guide

What is Centrelink?

Centrelink is Australia's social security system, providing financial support to eligible residents and citizens. As a new migrant, understanding what benefits you may be entitled to can provide crucial financial support during your settlement period. Most payments require you to be an Australian resident, which typically means holding a permanent visa, though some temporary visa holders may be eligible for specific payments.

JobSeeker Payment

JobSeeker provides financial support while you look for work. To be eligible, you must be between 22 and Age Pension age, actively looking for work, and meet residency requirements. The payment is approximately $750-900 per fortnight for singles, $680 each for couples. You must apply for at least 15 jobs per fortnight and attend regular appointments with a Job Services Provider.

New migrants typically need to wait 104 weeks (2 years) before becoming eligible, though some exceptions apply. If you are a refugee or hold certain humanitarian visas, you may be eligible immediately. The waiting period also doesn't apply if you are in severe financial hardship.

Family Payments

Family Tax Benefit Part A: Helps with the costs of raising children. Maximum $191.24 per fortnight per child under 13, reducing based on family income. Available to families earning up to around $80,000-100,000 depending on circumstances.

Family Tax Benefit Part B: Provides extra help for single parents or families with one main income. Maximum $162.54 per fortnight for families with children under 5.

Child Care Subsidy: Helps with the cost of approved childcare. Can cover 85-90% of childcare fees for lower-income families, reducing to 50% for higher-income families. Activity test applies — you must be working, studying, or volunteering to receive higher subsidies.

Age Pension

Available from age 67 for those who meet residency requirements. You need to have lived in Australia for at least 10 years, with at least 5 years continuous. Maximum payment is approximately $1,020 per fortnight for singles, $1,540 combined for couples. The pension is means-tested based on income and assets. Your home is not counted as an asset, but other investments and savings are.

Disability Support Pension

For people who have a permanent disability that prevents them from working 15+ hours per week. The assessment process is rigorous, requiring detailed medical evidence. Payment rates are similar to Age Pension. You must be under Age Pension age and meet residency requirements.

How to Apply

Most applications are done online through myGov linked to your Centrelink account. You'll need your TFN, bank details, identity documents, and relevant supporting documents (employment records, medical certificates, etc.). Processing times vary from 2-8 weeks depending on the payment type and complexity of your circumstances.

Tip: Apply as soon as you think you might be eligible — payments are generally not backdated before your application date. If you're unsure about eligibility, use the online payment estimator or visit a Centrelink office for advice.

Important Obligations

All Centrelink recipients have obligations. Report income changes within 14 days, notify of address changes, attend appointments, and keep receipts for expenses. Failure to meet obligations can result in payment suspension or debt recovery. Centrelink has sophisticated data matching systems that cross-check with ATO, immigration, and other government databases.
